Dr. Schmidt Visits Motiva® Breast Implant Factory

Going the Extra Mile to Bring the Highest Quality Care to Vermont: Dr. Schmidt Visits Motiva® Breast Implant Factory to Stay at the Forefront of Aesthetic Surgery

At Vermont Plastic Surgery, we are committed to offering our patients the safest, most innovative options available in aesthetic medicine. That’s why board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandra Schmidt recently traveled to Costa Rica to visit the Motiva® breast implant manufacturing facility to learn about the new technology and see what’s coming for the future of breast augmentation.

If you’re considering breast augmentation in Vermont, read Dr. Schmidt’s report from her trip and learn why Motiva implants might be right for you.

What Are Motiva Breast Implants?

Motiva breast implants are 6th-generation silicone implants designed with patient safety and aesthetics in mind. Manufactured by Establishment Labs, Motiva implants have been available outside the US since 2010. In 2024, they received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the use of Ergonomix® and Round Plus breast implants in primary and revision breast augmentation making them available for the first time in the United States.

Key Features of Motiva Implants:

  • Soft, cohesive silicone gel for a natural feel and optimal shape retention. Different types of gels (Ergonomix vs. Round Plus) allow customization based on your desired shape.
  • Improved implant strength and flexibility for better durability and natural feel and movement of the implants.
  • SmoothSilk®/SilkSurface® Biocompatible Shell – Designed to reduce inflammation and lower the risk of capsular contracture. In a clinical study of 451 patients at 32 US centers, the rate of capsular contracture was less than 1%.
  • BluSeal® technology – makes it easy to confirm that the implants are intact and free from any defects

The Latest Breast Augmentation Techniques for Minimally Invasive Surgery and a Custom Look

During her visit, Dr. Schmidt reunited with her residency mentor Dr. Marissa Tenenbaum from Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) who performed live breast augmentation surgery using Motiva implants. The procedure showcased:

  • Minimal-touch insertion technique to reduce contamination
  • Precision pocket creation for natural implant placement
  • Motiva Sizing System for perfect pre-surgical planning

Seeing these techniques firsthand reinforced Dr. Schmidt’s decision to offer Motiva breast augmentation in Vermont using the most modern and effective methods available. It was also a fun opportunity to see Dr. Tenenbaum!

What’s Next in Breast Implants? Injectable Innovation on the Horizon

During her visit, Dr. Schmidt learned about Motiva’s upcoming injectable breast implant, a groundbreaking concept that could redefine minimally invasive breast enhancement. The technology uses the engineered viscoelastic properties of the implant to stretch and “inject” it through a tube, using new techniques to get it into position.

While not expected to be available in the US soon, this new approach could lead to smaller incisions, shorter surgeries, and less downtime. Dr. Schmidt is monitoring their developments. We’ll keep you posted!

Why Choose Motiva Breast Implants or a Traditional Implant for Breast Augmentation at Vermont Plastic Surgery?

At Vermont Plastic Surgery, Dr. Schmidt is focused on tailoring the right treatment options to each patient. She listens to each patient and provides expert advice based on their individual situation.

Why do patients choose Motiva implants?

  • Motiva implants have improved elasticity and a more natural look and feel
  • They have a lower risk of capsular contracture vs. other types of silicone gel implants
  • Personalized sizing and shape options to achieve more upper fullness with a Round Plus implant or a more natural teardrop shape and movement with an Ergonomix implant

Why do patients choose traditional implants?

  • Some patients feel more comfortable with saline implants instead of silicone implants. For any gel implant, FDA recommends ultrasound or MRI 5-6 years after surgery and then every 2-3 years thereafter. Some people prefer not to worry about this maintenance and opt for a saline implant instead.
  • Motiva Ergonomix implants can carry a higher cost.
  • Some patients are cautious about new technology and prefer the “tried and true” option

Whether you’re considering your first breast augmentation or a revision, Motiva implants offer beauty without compromise—and Dr. Schmidt is one of the only surgeons in the region with firsthand experience at the source.
